Teaching Philosophy
01
Speaking
My teaching philosophy is that teaching should be transformative for both teachers and students, and it is based on six core beliefs. First, students must engage in authentic activities to develop speaking skills. My own experience in the Philippines showed me that disconnected classroom exercises hinder meaningful language acquisition, so I emphasize activities that mirror real-world situations to foster retention and application. Second, integrating all language macro-skills—such as reading, listening, and writing—can help students develop strong speaking abilities, as these skills collectively expand their grammar and vocabulary and foster coherent, fluent speech. Third, there must be a balance between teaching accuracy and fluency, as I observed that excessive focus on accuracy in my country often undermines fluency. I aim to create balanced tasks that develop pitch, intonation, and grammar skills. Fourth, teachers must continually pursue professional development to improve and stay current; I plan to collaborate, attend seminars, and welcome feedback to refine my methods. Fifth, giving constructive and specific feedback is crucial in making students feel seen, guiding them in areas like accuracy and motivating them to improve through positive reinforcement. Lastly, learning should be fun and engaging, as motivation is key to language learning. I will create interactive lessons using technology and, where possible, introduce students to native speakers to enrich their experience.
03
Writing
I believe that teaching writing is a dynamic process that empowers students to articulate their thoughts, engage in critical thinking, and express themselves effectively. My approach is centered on creating a supportive and inclusive environment where students feel encouraged to explore their ideas and take ownership of their writing journey.
I view writing as both a skill and an art, requiring practice, reflection, and guidance. Therefore, I integrate process-oriented strategies, such as brainstorming, drafting, revising, and editing, to help students understand that good writing evolves through effort and iteration. I aim to balance explicit instruction on the conventions of writing with opportunities for creative and authentic expression.
Collaboration is an essential element of my teaching philosophy. I encourage peer feedback, discussions, and workshops to help students learn from one another and develop critical analysis skills. Additionally, I integrate technology to enhance the writing experience, offering tools for drafting, research, and feedback that reflect the ways writing is used in academic and professional contexts.
Above all, I strive to make writing meaningful by connecting it to students’ goals, experiences, and interests. By fostering a growth mindset and emphasizing the value of writing as a lifelong skill, I aim to equip my students with the confidence and competence to succeed in academic, professional, and personal pursuits.
02
Reading
Students should be given authentic and level-appropriate reading materials to enhance their effectiveness and efficiency in learning. As a teacher, my role is to help students prepare for real-world involvement, and authentic content better assesses their readiness for this. I believe reading materials should challenge students' comprehension, not always being easy but stimulating their critical thinking and encouraging the use of various reading strategies to grasp the material's meaning. To enhance reading comprehension in a learner's L2, employing diverse pre-reading strategies and introducing key vocabulary is crucial for activating prior knowledge and facilitating a deeper understanding of unfamiliar texts. Reading in a second language can be challenging, so I will use pre-reading strategies and introduce potentially difficult vocabulary to better prepare students and help them overcome challenges with new words. Professional development is essential for teachers to stay current with reading trends and strategies, benefiting both teaching effectiveness and student success. Engaging in workshops, collaborations, and seminars will help me share and acquire diverse teaching methods to support my students. Achieving reading comprehension requires balancing accuracy and fluency, as overemphasizing accuracy can hinder understanding and limit fluency development. I believe integrating both will improve comprehension and foster critical thinking. I will use formative and summative assessments to measure proficiency and identify areas for improvement, ensuring my teaching is impactful.
04
Listening
I believe that teaching listening is essential for fostering effective communication and promoting language acquisition. Listening is not just a passive skill but an active process of meaning-making, requiring focused attention, interpretation, and reflection. My goal is to help students become confident, strategic, and engaged listeners in both academic and real-world contexts.
I approach listening instruction with a balance of explicit teaching and experiential practice. I emphasize pre-listening activities to activate background knowledge, while during-listening tasks develop focused attention and comprehension skills. Post-listening activities provide opportunities for reflection, analysis, and application, helping students connect what they hear to their own experiences and knowledge.
Recognizing the challenges of listening in a second language, I provide scaffolding to help students navigate features of spoken language, such as speed, accents, fillers, and pauses. I also incorporate authentic listening materials—from academic lectures to everyday conversations—to prepare students for diverse contexts.
To build autonomy, I encourage students to use metacognitive strategies, such as setting goals, monitoring comprehension, and evaluating their listening progress. Additionally, I integrate technology and multimedia tools, enabling students to practice listening in flexible and engaging ways.
Ultimately, I aim to create a supportive environment where students feel empowered to take risks, develop their listening skills, and grow their confidence. By equipping them with strategies and experiences that promote active listening, I hope to help my students succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
